Haryana govt waives interest, penalty of Rs 8,000 crore on outstanding property tax

The Haryana government has decided to waive interest and penalty totalling nearly Rs 8,000 crore on outstanding property taxes across the state.

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar made the announcement in a press conference on October 6 in Chandigarh. He also announced that a rebate of 15 percent would be given on the payment of property tax arrears.

Addressing a press conference, Khattar said that after his government rolled out ‘Property IDs’, an online property management system, the incidence of property tax arrears in lakhs of properties has surfaced.

“So, taking a big decision in favour of the citizens of the state, I announce the waiver of interest and penalty of approximately Rs 8,000 crore on the outstanding tax on their property. Apart from this, a 15 percent discount will also be given on depositing arrears,” the chief minister said in a press conference.

He said that there may be some disputes or cases involving people who have paid their taxes, but the payment is not reflected in the system. To address such cases and to ensure that maximum people gain from this scheme, the government will set up special camps across the state where officials of the property tax department will be present with all the data and other information to help the people, Khattar said.

Houses for the poor

Khattar also said that with the aim of providing homes to people belonging to the economically weaker sections (EWS), the Haryana government had launched the Mukhyamantri Shahri Aawas Yojana, for which nearly two lakh people have applied so far.

Under this scheme, applications are sought on the government portal from poor families whose annual income is less than Rs 1.8 lakh per year and who do not own a living unit. He said that the plot size being given under the scheme is one marla or 272 square feet (sq ft) and its price has been kept at around Rs 1 lakh. The flat being offered under the scheme is 450 square feet and is priced between Rs 6 lakh and Rs 8 lakh depending on the city.

The CM said that to take advantage of this scheme, people will also be provided loan facilities from banks for a maximum period of 20 years. “We will finalise the policy and upload it on the portal by next month (November 2023),” he said.

Regularisation of colonies

He said that the state government has decided to regularise 303 colonies in 14 districts with immediate effect. The government will spend Rs 3,000 crore to develop basic infrastructure in these colonies.

A total of 1,438 colonies have been regularised since 2014 in the state, the CM said.
