A central GST superintendent was caught red-handed by anti-corruption bureau (ACB) sleuths while accepting a bribe of Rs 1,500 from a businessman. The accused official had sought the amount from the complainant to process an online application for the GST registration number which he had been dilly-dallying for past 20 days.
The ACB arrested Ranjit Kumar Krishna Kumar Sah, a superintendent in CGST Range 3 office in Nanpura. A class II officer, Sah is native of Bihar and has completed 14 years in service in GST and central excise department. Sah’s current monthly salary is Rs 1.14 lakh. The accused was caught under a flyover on a road near Delhi Gate.
The complainant had applied online for CGST registration and had also submitted documents. Meanwhile, the accused demanded Rs 3,000 for the verification of documents and put up a positive report. The complainant showed inability to pay Rs 3,000, after which he agreed to accept Rs 1,500.
“The complainant claimed that his online application was supposed to get processed within three to four days but following a delay he inquired when the accused demanded the bribe. In the online process the applicant is not required to meet the officers,” said an ACB officer.
