The President of India on December 25, 2023, granted assent to three significant bills to overhaul the country’s criminal justice system. The bills, namely Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, have been officially notified and published in the Gazette of India on the same day.
These legislative measures replace the existing Indian Penal Code (IPC), Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act. The process began with their introduction in the Lok Sabha on August 11, initially known as Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Bill.
Subsequently, they underwent thorough examination by a parliamentary committee led by Brij Lal before being passed by the Lok Sabha on December 20 and the Rajya Sabha on December 21.
This marks a significant milestone in the reform of India’s criminal justice system, reflecting the culmination of a legislative process that addresses key aspects of legal procedures and citizen protection.
