Union Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Nitin Gadkari has said that India is expected to become the largest exporter of Personal protective equipment (PPE) kits in the next six months.
The MSME Minister said this during a virtual interaction with Hyderabad-based premier B-School Indian School Business (ISB) faculty on Monday. “MSMEs are making 5 lakh PPE kits per day and now we are trying to get permission to export it and I am confident that within six months India will be the largest exporter of PPE kits,” he said.
Currently, as per industry estimates, India is the second-largest PPE kit manufacturer in the world following China. Gadkari also said that a competitive financial system has to be created in the country to boost lending activity and cater to MSMEs and small businesses. The Minister also sought suggestions in the area of land, liquidity, labour, logistics, litigation and skilled workers to boost growth in the economy from ISB faculty and researchers.
“ISB can study the ways and means to increase exports of the country,” Gadkari added. In the month of June, Gadkari had asked the Commerce Ministry to allow exports of personal protective equipment (PPE) kits, as the country has ramped up its capacity significantly over the last two months.
“We have tremendous capacity now. We don’t need to import PPE kits from China but we can now start exporting it,” he said, speaking at the launch a report prepared by National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) and Council on Energy Environment and Water (CEEW) Jobs, Growth and Sustainability: a new social contract for India’s recovery.
Similarly, domestic manufacturers have also received orders to export sanitizers, he added. “In March we imported PPE kits from China and now more than five lakh PPE kits are being manufactured by MSMEs each day,” the MSME minister added.
