The Thane anti-corruption bureau arrested a senior officer with the sales tax (GST) department of the Maharashtra government allegedly for demanding and accepting a bribe from the complainant to the tune of Rs 20 lakh. The ACB official said, Dhananjay Shirsat who is the assistant sales tax commissioner (GST) has been arrested for the alleged crime. The deputy superintendent of police (ACB) Maya More stated Shirsat had accepted the bribe amount of Rs 20 lakh out of the demanded sum of Rs 30 lakh which was the first installment.
Shirsat had made a demand of Rs 30 lakh from a complainant who owns a hotel in the Kapurbawdi locality of the city for not carrying out the assessment for last year and issue of a new GST registration.
Irked by the demand, the aggrieved complainant lodged a complaint with the Thane ACB officials who verified the complaint and after which laid a trap on Shirsat and arrested the officer accepting the bribe amount of Rs 20 lakh from the complainant, the ACB official said.
