The Central Bureau of Investigation arrested an Income Tax officer and an inspector, posted in Nagaur on Thursday, along with a Chartered Accountant in a case of bribery involving Rs 4 lakh. They had demanded the bribe from a businessman from Nagaur to settle the matter pertaining to an undeclared income drawn by the I-T officials on the businessman. According to the spokesperson (CBI), R K Gaur, a case had been registered on a complaint, against two Income Tax officers, an Income Tax inspector, all from the Income Tax Department, Nagaur; a Chartered Accountant and others. “The allegations were that these officials of the Income Tax Department demanded a bribe of Rs 5 lakh from the complainant, through a Nagaur-based Chartered Accountant, for settling issues arising out of an Income Tax survey conducted by the Income Tax Department on the business premises of the complainant’s firms and his family members at Nagaur a few days back,” said Gaur.
After the verification of the complaint, CBI laid a trap and caught the Chartered Accountant Suresh Pareek, while demanding and accepting the negotiated bribe amount of Rs 4 lakh. After the investigation and interrogation of Pareek, an Income Tax officer Laxman Singh and an Income Tax inspector Prem Sukh Didel were also arrested by the CBI. “Searches were conducted at the residential and office premises of the accused at 10 different places at Nagaur, Jaipur and Merta city, which resulted in recovery of incriminating documents,” Gaur informed. More officers of the department are on the radar of the CBI and more arrests cannot be ruled out followed by further investigation.
Teams of CBI also visited the I-T office in Nagaur for investigation. According to the sources, the survey at the business premises of the complainant had been conducted by the I-T officers on March 5 and 6 and a large income of approximately Rs 3 crore had been calculated by them as undeclared income. In order to weaken the case against the businessman, the officers had been building pressure on him demanding a bribe of Rs 5 lakh through the chartered accountant Pareek. The harassed businessman brought the matter to the CBI and a trap was laid by the CBI sleuths on Thursday. As per the plan, the officers called the businessman at the residence of Pareek in Nagaur with the bribe amount and the moment he handed over the amount to Pareek, CBI sleuths swung into action, arresting Pareek and seized the money.
