Gujarat Govt notifies ‘Gujarat Laws (Amendment of Provisions) Ordinance, 2024’ to Align with State Legislation with New Criminal Laws

The Gujarat government has promulgated the Gujarat Laws (Amendment of Provisions) Ordinance, 2024 to amend state laws referencing the repealed Indian Penal Code, 1860, Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, and Indian Evidence Act, 1872, with the newly enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023. This ordinance ensures these new acts are integrated into Gujarat’s legal framework following their enactment by Parliament. It replaces references and aligns provisions to avoid ambiguity, effective immediately upon promulgation due to the legislative assembly not being in session. Governor Acharya Devvrat signed the ordinance on June 26, 2024, in Gandhinagar.
