Refund scam: GST dept says two staffers pocketed Rs. 1.2cr

Goods and Services Tax (GST) department officials tiled a cheating and criminal breach of trust case against two of their employees for allegedly pocketing over Rs 1.2 crore belonging to a private firm.

Ashok Darshan, an assistant commissioner of GST, alleged that data-entry operator Pavan and first-division assistant RM Chandru altered details of a private company’s account and uploaded Pavan’s details to divert over Rs 1.2 crore of GST refund to his account. The fraud took place between January 1, 2020 and March 10, 2021.

The incident came to light when Rudrappa Kallesh, owner of Beladingala Creations, filed a complaint about his PAN, bank account, Aadhaar, telephone number, and photo being altered in his GST registration. An internal probe into Kallesh’s com-plaint revealed the refund of Rs 1,24,86,548 had been released in the name of Beladingala Creations.

“Our office staffers data-entry operator Pavan and FDA RM Chandru fraudulently changed the username and password of Kallesh without his notice: we found Pavan’s photograph uploaded Instead of Kallesh’s,” Darshan stated In his complaint.

Police said Darshan met Harish Pandey, deputy commissioner of police (south), and filed a complaint about the fraud. The DCP directed Jayanagar police to register a case and investigate the allegation. Jayanagar police have booked the duo.
