Technical glitches in GST portal leave dealers worried

Technical glitches in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) portal for the last four days have left dealers worried about missing the fast approaching due date for filing GSTR 1.

The last date for filing GSTR 1 (sales details) is the 11th of every month.

Failure to file the returns on the due date may devoid taxpayers of availing the input tax credit, said tax professionals.

“GST portal has been working very slow since the past over four days and causing trouble in uploading documents. The portal is not accepting correct login details and not allowing uploading files. Delay and missing of the deadline in filing the GSTR 1 may deprive taxpayers of claiming ITC,” Madhya Pradesh Tax Law Bar Association president AK Lakhotia said.

The filing of GST returns requires files to be uploaded in the JSON format but the GST portal is not accepting the format and showing errors on uploading the file, said tax professionals.

Composition dealers have also faced trouble in filing the annual return for the financial year 2019-20 due to absence of table 6 in GSTR 4 that asks for details of outward supplies/inward supplies attracting reverse charge during the year, said tax professionals.

The GSTR-4 form is an annual return form for those taxpayers who have opted GST Composition scheme and unlike a normal taxpayer requires to furnish three monthly returns, a dealer opting for the composition scheme is required to furnish only one return, which is GSTR-4 once in a year by the 30th of April of the following financial year.

“Even the composition dealers faced issues in filing GSTR 4 and many failed to file the return on the due date. Those who failed to file the return as on April 30 are liable for late fees of Rs 50 per day starting May 1 and maximum penalty of Rs 10,000,” Lakhotia said.
